More and more we see and read about how doctors are going to school to learn how to prescribe medications. The astronomical rate of increased use of these controlled substances is putting a future generation at risk of being drugged out of their minds by adulthood. Sadly, many doctors today are becoming legal drug pushers. Continue reading MSNBC Headline Reads: More Teens Getting Dangerous Prescriptions

Last week major news agencies like USA Today and others reported on a study from an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. It detailed how young brains become damaged in terms of executive, cognitive and decision-making functions.
The emphasis was on how young teens experienced executive or cognitive difficulties that persist due to how brains are not fully formed until into our 20′s. It also found that users would typically smoke a greater quantity and more usage of other drugs as compared to those who did not start smoking till later in life. Biophysical drug rehab centers treat many of these kids and young adults after being on ADD/ADHD meds for months or years and have since become addicted to the medication. Biophysical rehab programs specialize in not using additional drugs or medications to ‘cure’ the addiction that the person presently has. This in itself is uncommon in today’s traditional rehab model.
In doing so they find that a large number suffer from serious side effects due to using these stimulants. Side effects are common due to over stimulating the central nervous system but also because such powerful stimulants rob the body of vital nutritional supplements; cause prolonged periods of little or no sleep and suppress the appetite which produces an underlying malnutrition situation that, ironically, creates more ‘symptoms’ of ADD/ADHD. On Wednesday MSNBC.com reported 1 in 10 kids today are diagnosed with ADHD – a number that has skyrocketed since 2003. The CDC publication, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, released findings from a survey of parents with children ages 4-17, who say a doctor or health care provider had told them their child had ADHD. CNN reported today on yet another way our tax dollars are being well spent in the name of science and health. Their article covered a study by Tracy L. Rupp, a research psychologist in the Behavioral Biology Branch of the Center for Military Psychiatry and Neuroscience at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
The article should have been more about how laughable this “research” is, and the outrage the public should have at the huge expense this must have cost taxpayers. Instead they willingly help release this drivel as if some breakthrough was made. Continue reading Study Suggests Party More & You’ll Need More Sleep (Duh?!!)

Countless millions have been spent in PR and advertising in order to make it the next wonder drug for treating cravings in alcoholics. But not even lukewarm results exist. So, now it seems Vivitrol (naltexone) is hoping to find an even larger potential audience for those who have opiate addictions, thanks to our bought and paid for FDA. Back when I was a kid we heard a lot about LSD flashbacks and how 5, 10, 20 years later a person who dropped acid in the 60′s could experience a full acid turn on simply out of the blue, seemingly without cause. This has been known to happen to people while driving a vehicle or during a board room presentation but the results are the same – a partial or full LSD trip many years after using the drug. How does this happen? Continue reading The Relationship Of LSD Flashbacks & Today’s Drug Epidemics

If you have an opiate, benzo or alcohol addiction you may get 3-5 days of medical detox in a traditional rehab before spending the rest of your days in 12 Step group meetings. This is the disease model that is most prevalent in the US. If you use meth, cocaine or many other drugs, very likely there is no physical help at all. In either case, this is far too little treatment to address the physical nature of addiction.
The problem is that so often cravings are wrongly labeled as mental in nature when in fact they are purely physical. Our bodies can exert tremendous influence over our thoughts and willpower, and while not an excuse to use, addressing it certainly should be something included in any alcohol or drug rehab program if we are to experience a full, lasting recovery. In nearly all cases with traditional rehab, addressing the body is greatly overlooked and therefore becomes an omitted factor in successfully achieving permanent sobriety. Most of the time addressing the body is not even considered a valid part of rehab treatment. Ask anyone who has called to get help for cocaine, meth or Adderall addiction for example. And, unless severe withdrawals are occurring with alcohol, opiates or benzos, all focus will be on the emotional side of treatment. Even with cases calling for medical ‘detox’, it is only a matter of 3-5 days (for most) and just enough to get over the initial sickness from coming off the drugs or alcohol. This is a terrible underestimation of effort and poses the greatest barrier to any treatment of emotional issues.
Why is this so important? The reason is pretty simple, actually. It comes down to can someone truly focus on emotional help for addiction if they do not feel physically well enough to do so? The answer is no, they cannot. Continue reading How Addressing The Body Opens The Door To Addiction Recovery
